The Second Chakra Svadhisthana

ree

The Second Chakra is named Svadhisthana

The second chakra is where are creativity, as well as, our sexuality resides. The element is water which is fluid and flows along paths of least resistance and is absorbed into the earth, the element of the first chakra, Muladhara. What happens in the years between age seven and 14 can affect the balance of the 2nd chakra. The organs and systems associated with Svahisthana are the reproductive system, urinary system, lower back and pelvis.

Svahistana is located between the navel and the pubic bone and the Sanskrit word translates to ‘the seat of one’s self’. It is the seat of our sexual and emotional issues and imbalances can cause reproductive problems; sexual disfunction manifesting in excess, obsession with sex or lack of desire; underdeveloped social skills; obsessive attachments; urinary problems; disfunction of the kidneys; rigidity; poorly defined boundaries; guilt and shame.

Pleasure is the motivating drive of the 2ndchakra. Pleasure provides a healing energy that allows us to open our senses and connect with the world. It is through the 2nd chakra that we share pleasure and a sense of connection through appreciating beauty in the natural world or that we express in art. Sharing common experiences like listening to music, enjoying food, touching. Svahisthana is the where we derive our creativity form, both in the creation of new life and the creation of our own human endeavors which are then manifested in the physical plane through Muladhara.

The most common injury to Svadhisthana is the, usually inadvertent, expression by someone who is influential in our lives, that what we’ve created isn’t good enough. A child brings home a picture and the parent forgets to put on the fridge may cause that child to feel they aren’t ‘good’ enough at art and they will stop making efforts. There are worse injuries of course that cause trauma and long term imbalance and disfunction such as sexual abuse or causing deep shame over a child’s first expressions of sexuality.

To balance the second chakra try playing like a child. Drawing, or making music even if you don’t think you’ve got the requisite amount of talent. Enjoy letting the creative energy of your imagination flow. Ensure your drinking enough water to flush out the accumulation of environmental toxins that enter your body each day. Act on something your passionate about. Learn a yoga or meditation practice that balances Svadisthana. Left nostril breathing or badda konasana (butterfly pose).
